The Atlas Table
A Custom 13-Foot Douglas Fir Dining Table for a Muskoka Family Retreat
The Atlas Table is a bespoke 13-foot dining table handcrafted from solid Douglas Fir and designed specifically for a modern family retreat in Muskoka, Ontario. Built to anchor a long, linear dining room overlooking the forest, the table brings together architectural scale, heritage craftsmanship, and the warm, natural character of solid wood furniture.
Custom Dining Table Designed for a Muskoka Setting
The clients needed a large-format dining table that could seat a full family comfortably while blending seamlessly into a home surrounded by trees, natural light, and water. Located off the kitchen and framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, the dining space required a piece that acted as an anchor without overwhelming the room.
Studio Konior’s design brief called for a vintage-inspired dining table that offered generous legroom, balanced proportions, and long-term durability. The table also needed to knock down for transport to the remote site—critical for large furniture pieces in cottage-country builds.
Handcrafted From Solid Douglas Fir
Hamilton Holmes engineered the Atlas Table as a solid Douglas Fir trestle table with extended rails for structural stability and enduring flatness over a 13-foot span. The knock-down construction allows the table to be moved and reassembled easily while maintaining the presence of a permanent, heirloom-quality piece.
Douglas Fir was selected for its:
• natural lightness and expressive grain
• luminous, warm tone that pairs well with Muskoka’s forest palette
• excellent structural performance for long-span dining tables
Softened edges, rounded profiles, and subtle details keep the scale approachable, while the gabled end geometry offers a refined nod to 1970s Canadian and American furniture design.
Integrated Into a Full Interior Design Vision
The table sits beneath cascading rope-cluster pendants by Cuff Studio, whose warm light enhances the wood’s softness at dusk. Paired with Muskoka Living’s “James” dining chairs, the dining area becomes both a gathering place and a viewpoint—a room where handcrafted millwork, natural materials, and contemporary cottage living converge.
Why Custom Furniture Matters
Projects like the Atlas Table demonstrate the value of locally made, custom solid-wood furniture in modern cottage and residential design. A handcrafted dining table can be tailored to the scale of the room, the flow of the home, and the specific needs of the family—something mass-market pieces cannot offer.
For homeowners, architects, and interior designers seeking custom dining tables, large-format trestle tables, or bespoke Douglas Fir furniture, the Atlas Table represents the level of detail, engineering, and craftsmanship that Hamilton Holmes brings to every commission.
“It’s a statement piece—beautiful and massive—but still warm and familiar. Everyone who sees it asks where we got it.”
